Santorini - Greece

Akrotiri

  • What is the difference between Akrotiri and Fira in Santorini?

Akrotiri and Fira are two distinct villages on Santorini that attract different types of traveller.

Fira is the island's capital — its most connected, vibrant, and accessible town, with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, cultural institutions, and transport links.

Akrotiri sits at the southern tip of the island, quieter and more removed from the tourist bustle, and is known for its Bronze Age archaeological site, the Faros lighthouse sunset, and some of the island's most dramatic caldera views without the crowds. In short:

    • Fira is the best base for those who want to explore and be central
    • Akrotiri suits those who prioritise peace, privacy, and one of the island's most distinctive settings.
  • Can I visit both Akrotiri and Fira in one day?

Yes. Akrotiri and Fira are approximately 12 kilometres apart — around 20 minutes by taxi. A typical day might involve visiting the Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning (cooler, and the site closes in early afternoon), spending the afternoon and evening in Fira for the caldera walk, museum visits, and dinner, and then returning to Akrotiri for the Faros lighthouse sunset. Divino Caldera can arrange taxis and island transport for guests.

  • What is Akrotiri in Santorini?

Akrotiri is a village on the southern tip of Santorini, perched on the volcanic caldera rim facing west.

It is home to one of the most significant Bronze Age archaeological sites in Europe — a Minoan settlement preserved under volcanic ash from the eruption of approximately 1627 BC, comparable in importance to Pompeii — as well as the Faros lighthouse, Red Beach, White Beach, and some of the island's most undisturbed caldera views.

It is significantly quieter than Fira and Oia, making it a favoured base for guests seeking the Santorini landscape without the peak-season crowds.

  • What are the best things to do in Akrotiri, Santorini?

The top experiences in and around Akrotiri include:

    • Visiting the Bronze Age Akrotiri archaeological excavation (open Tuesday–Sunday)
    • Watching the sunset from the Faros lighthouse — quieter and comparably dramatic to Oia
    • Swimming at Red Beach (dramatic red volcanic cliffs above black sand) and White Beach (accessible by boat or coastal path)
    • Taking a private catamaran cruise around the caldera with stops at the Nea Kameni volcano and natural hot springs
    • Hiking across Nea Kameni's active lava fields; and wine tasting at nearby caldera-view vineyards.
  • Is the Faros lighthouse sunset better than Oia's?

For many visitors, yes — and the comparison is often made in favour of the Faros lighthouse for travellers who prioritise experience over spectacle.

The sunset views are equally dramatic, the lighthouse is a 10–15 minute walk from Divino Caldera, and the crowd at peak season numbers in the dozens rather than the thousands that gather in Oia. Oia remains the island's iconic sunset spot; Akrotiri offers the same quality of view with far greater peace.
